Farewell and best wishes to Seattle Police Captain, Steve Paulsen!

The West Seattle Blog reported yesterday that Seattle Police Captain, Steve Paulsen will be leaving the Southwest Precinct and is being reassigned to the South Precinct. We will certainly miss him! He has been such a wonderful resource to the West Seattle Block Watch Captains’ Network and an enthusiastic supporter of our efforts.

Captain Paulsen’s replacement at the Southwest Precinct will be Captain Joe Kessler. Many of you may know him already, as he was Captain Paulsen’s predecessor.

We look forward to working with Captain Kessler and wish Captain Paulsen all the best!

Picnic at the Precinct 2012 was fun!

We had a great time at the SW Precinct Picnic today. Many thanks to those of you who stopped by to talk with us!

West Seattle Blog included a photo of us in their event coverage. And, following are a few of our photos from the event.

Our CPT officers are being redeployed…temporarily?

We’ve received word of changes at the SW Police Precinct. Most significantly, our Community Police Team (CPT) officers are being redeployed — for the summer, perhaps longer — to bolster patrol officer levels in the neighborhoods. As well, the SW Police Precinct will cut back on the front desk staffing so the precinct won’t be open as much as it has been.

Here’s coverage of these changes and more details from both the West Seattle Blog and the West Seattle Herald.

The CPT officers provide a lot of value to our group (for example, the CPTED training!), so we’re hoping that this change is temporary…

Community Builder Awards follow-up

Deanie had jotted down a few words for the award ceremony in case we had an opportunity to say a public thank you. Since the presentation did not allow for that, we post it here for *everyone*.

On behalf of the WS Blockwatch Captains’ Network, we are grateful for this opportunity to thank the Seattle Neighborhood Group for this recognition of our efforts to strengthen and enhance our West Seattle communities. We also wish to thank, for their essential and important cooperation, every WS Blockwatch Captain who has volunteered by stepping up to serve the families, neighbors, and businesses of West Seattle.

Also, thanks go to the efforts of the West Seattle Crime Prevention Council and the West Seattle Blog, for providing opportunities where WS citizens can stay informed about crime and public safety issues which might impact them.

Finally, we offer our most sincere thanks to the SW Crime Prevention Coordinator Benjamin Kinlow, Lt. Norm James who is in charge of Operations for the SW Precinct and Captain Steve Paulsen, our SW Precinct Commander.

Without the engagement and cooperation of each of these committed people, any success in developing a BW network would have been very limited. Deb, Karen and I are humbled. The work Kelly McKinney and the Seattle Neighborhood Group does encourages efforts such as ours and we look forward to what we hope will be a long productive relationship with all of the caring folks there.

Finally, I think it is fair to say that, in the process of organizing and growing our WS BW Captains’ Network, each of us has been deeply gratified to meet so many engaged and pro-active neighbors throughout the Southwest and Delridge neighborhoods who improve the quality of life for so many, quietly and with little accolade. We are so very glad to have this opportunity to say thank you to each BW captain and every pro-active BW participant and that we share the honor of this award with each one of them.

Special Guest Speaker:  Our new SW Precinct Captain, Steve Paulsen!

Captain Steve Paulsen has accepted my invitation to introduce himself and speak to the Blockwatch Captains’ Network at our upcoming meeting.  He is going to give us his perspective on the value of Blockwatches in West Seattle and talk about his vision of how we can work together to build community and re-invigorate the Block Watch program. If all goes as planned, you will have the opportunity to let him know what issues you face in building your Blockwatch groups and your wish-list of things he could do to help.

I hope you will take the opportunity to show him how committed we are to revitalizing this program and let him know we appreciate his support!

The room is available ½ hour early, so feel free to arrive anytime after 6 PM to network or socialize. If we have time at the end of the meeting; we can also socialize, network or exchange ideas in smaller groups.

Hope to see you there!
