Subsequent application deadlines will be on 6/1 and 10/5. Applications for “Small Sparks” grants are accepted year-round. Applications for “Large Project Fund” grants are due on 5/4 this year. You can find additional details and resources for all of the grants here.

Saturday, 2/14/15: Neighbor Appreciation Day is coming up on February 14th! It coincides with Valentine’s Day this year.

Hope your year is off to a great start!

UPDATE, 1/25/15: We’ve since announced the agenda for our January monthly meeting (on January 27th); see it here. As well, we are co-sponsoring a Community Conversation with Seattle Police Chief, Kathleen O’Toole on Tuesday, February 3rd; more details here.

Upcoming events to note on your calendar!

Hi everyone! Now that the new year is well underway, we want to call a few upcoming dates to your attention.

Tuesday, 1/28, at 6:30 PM: Our West Seattle Block Watch Captains’ Network (WSBWCN) meetings resume this month at the SW Police Precinct (just southeast of the Home Depot store on Delridge) at 2300 SW Webster Street. FYI, we meet monthly on 4th Tuesdays; except in July, August, November and December. We hope you’ll join us! We’ll post the agenda for the January meeting soon.

Tuesday, 1/21, at 7 PM: The West Seattle Crime Prevention Council (WSCPC) meets one week earlier (3rd Tuesdays) in the same location at 7 PM. Their guest this month will be Ann Graves, Field Manager, Seattle Animal Control Shelter, Ms. Graves will discuss dog-flipping (theft on an animal that is subsequently sold), the leash law, dangerous and abused animals, and other animal related issues.

Thursday, 1/23/14, from 6 to 8 PM:  The Department of Neighborhoods (DON) is offering a free workshop to learn about Neighborhood Matching Fund grants. It will be held outside of West Seattle at the Rainier Community Center, 4600 38th Ave South. You can find more details here. The deadline for applications is February 3rd at 5 PM. Later in the year, in early June and early October, there will be additional opportunities to apply.

Saturday, 2/8/14: Neighbor Appreciation Day is coming up on February 8th!  Here is more information and some ideas about how you and your neighbors can celebrate.

If you know of other events or activities that we should add to our calendar, let us know!

Remember: no WSBWCN meetings in November or December!

Just wanted to post a reminder that we, West Seattle Block Watch Captains’ Network (WSBWCN), will not have monthly meetings this month or next. The primary reason for this is because our 4th Tuesday meeting day falls very close to the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.  Our next monthly meeting will be on Tuesday, January 28th, 6:30 – 8 PM at the SW Police Precinct (2300 SW Webster Street, Seattle, 98106). We look forward to seeing you then!

Note that the West Seattle Crime Prevention Council (WSCPC), which meets on 3rd Tuesdays at the same location, does have a meeting this month; it’s tomorrow, 7 – 8:30 PM.  The agenda is posted on the WSCPC website.

Although our organization doesn’t meet in person this month or next, we encourage you to communicate with each other via our Facebook group, which now has over 200 members! We’ll continue to post any items of interest there, as well as here, during our downtime.

Increase in West Seattle gang activity reported

Gang activity was the main topic at the recent West Seattle Crime Prevention Council (WSCPC) meeting on Tuesday, April 16th. If you missed it, as we did, you can find detailed coverage in these reports by the West Seattle Blog and the West Seattle Herald.

The Crime Prevention Council meets monthly on 3rd Tuesdays at 7 PM.  Our West Seattle Block Watch Captains’ Network meetings are a week later, on 4th Tuesdays from 6:30-8 PM. Both meetings are held at the SW Police Precinct, 2300 SW Webster Street (at Delridge Ave SW, next to Home Depot). Hope to see you at our next meeting on April 23rd; the agenda is posted here!

Our monthly meetings resume this month!

Our West Seattle Block Watch Captains’ Network (WSBWCN) meeting is on Tuesday, January 22, 6:30 – 8 PM (always 4th Tuesdays). Stay tuned for more details about the agenda!

Also, tomorrow, January 15th, 7 PM (3rd Tuesday) is the WS Crime Prevention Council’s community safety meeting. Their agenda includes precinct updates from Lt. Pierre Davis as well as guest presenter new Liquor Enforcement Officer, Lt. Tim Thompson. School safety is also on their list of topics to discuss.

Both meetings are at the SW Precinct (2300 SW Webster St, next to Home Depot). These are great opportunities to learn about safety concerns in our community, ask questions, and network with each other to build a stronger community!
