It’s not too late to register a Night Out event!

Mark Solomon, our Crime Prevention Coordinator, sent out a letter yesterday (attached below) with information regarding Night Out events.  He emphasizes that there is still time to register if you want to host an event and block off your street. He also included details about the Precinct Picnic.

Both of these events are on our calendar…hope they are on yours as well!

Need materials for your Night Out events?

Tomorrow (Tuesday, 7/31) is a second opportunity to pick up Night Out materials for your neighborhoods (for those of you who missed the first opportunity at our June meeting).

We have materials for adults as well as materials for kids.  The adult materials include information about crime prevention and emergency preparedness, and WSBWCN ‘No Soliciting’ signs (to make it more difficult for strangers to case your house).  The bags for kids contain fun items: 9-1-1 stickers and coloring books.

We have some of the materials (including the personal safety brochure) in multiple languages, so you can customize the bags to include those as well.

Stop by the SW Precinct meeting room between 11 AM & 1 PM. The materials aren’t collated/assembled yet…if you can help with that show up at 11 AM or thereabouts. If you just want to pick up preassembled materials and go, show up a little later than 11 or you’ll have to assemble/collate your own.

NEW:  If you picked up materials in June – feel free to come back if you want “Respect” booklets from SPD; these are targeted toward older youth and cover many topics concerning laws.

First come, first served, until we run out.

[Update: For those of you who don’t know, the address for the SW Precinct is 2300 SW Webster Street, Seattle 98106. It’s located adjacent to the Home Depot store on Delridge.]

Updated calendar!

Good to see so many of you at West Seattle Summer Fest last weekend! Our next event is coming up the Saturday (7/21), the West Seattle Grand Parade.  Here’s an updated list of our upcoming events:

  • 7/21:  Grand Parade. We’ve signed up to march in the parade with our cool new banner. Let us know if you’d like to join! We’ve never done this before; it would be great to have a huge contingent of BW Captains. The parade begins at 11 AM in Admiral, then heads south along California Ave SW.
  • 7/24:  No WSBWCN meeting (4th Tuesdays). We normally don’t meet in July or August.
  • 8/7:  Seattle Night Out (annually, each first Tuesday in August). These local events held throughout the city provide an excellent opportunity to meet your neighbors and build/strengthen your neighborhood Block Watch group.
  • 8/11:  Precinct Picnics (held at all 5 Seattle precincts). The SW Police Precinct always hosts a fun event with free food and entertainment; plus opportunities to meet the officers, learn about local community groups such as ours, and more!
  • 8/18:  Delridge Day. We’ll be doing outreach and handing out materials about personal safety, vehicle safety, etc.  Hope you’ll stop by!

As we noted earlier, you may be able to obtain a grant for your Night Out event if you’ve not done so previously. See the NEIGHBORHOOD Matching Fund (NMF) website for details.

Do you receive community safety newsletters from SPD?

Mark Solomon, the Crime Prevention Coordinator for the SW & South Police Precincts sent out an email update about Night Out 2012 today. As well, he recently published the June 2012 edition of the Seattle Police Community Newsletter and a notification about Level 3 sex offenders.

All of these are included below, as .jpg files, and as .pdf files which are more readable when printed.

Upcoming events and announcements!

Thanks to those of you who attended last night’s meeting! Afterwards, we realized that we neglected to mention some upcoming events, so here goes:

    • 7/13-15:  West Seattle Summer Festival (our wonderful annual street fair). Community groups will be located together (not sure yet of the exact location). We’ll be there on Saturday (7/14) from 10 – 2, possibly other times as well; hope you’ll stop by!
    • 7/24:  WSBWCN meeting (4th Tuesdays). We normally don’t meet in July, but will most likely have an informal meeting for those who want to assemble materials for their Night Out events (similar to what we did this evening, for those who missed it).  Don’t show up, unless we confirm that this is a go…
    • 7/28-29:  Alki Art Fair. We’ll have a booth somewhere along the beach. Hope for sunshine! The fair runs from 10 – 6, Saturday and SundayTurns out that we will NOT have a booth at this event after all; they won’t have neighborhood organizations and community group booths.

We wanted to mention that you may be able to obtain a grant for your Night Out event if you’ve not done so previously. See the NEIGHBORHOOD Matching Fund (NMF) website for details. Small Sparks grants (up to $1000) can be applied for at any time. They also are great for small Block Watch projects such as street signs.

[Updated 6/27 to include times and links to more of these events.]

[Updated 7/18 – we will not be at the  Alki Art Fair after all.]

We ARE having a June meeting… and it’s tomorrow!
